Russia's country code top-level domain .RU is celebrating its 19th birthday. The domain zone was officially opened on 7 April, 1994.

On 17 September, 2007, the millionth domain was registered in the .ru zone, and the two-million milestone was reached about two years later. The current total number of .ru domains is about 4.47 m.

In May, 2010, Russia's other country code domain, the Cyrillic .rf was introduced, and more Cyrillic domain names may appear in the future. The op-level domain .su, assigned to the Soviet Union in 1990 (about a year before the country dissolution), also remains in use.
